Anjelica Gonzalez

Professor of Biomedical Engineering, the Faculty Director of Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale (CITY), and the Head of Davenport College

In her appointment as Professor of Biomedical Engineering, she focuses on the development of mimetic structures of the human brain, skin and lung.

Her work has demonstrated relevance to discovery of therapeutic strategies for stroke and inflammatory and fibrotic dermal and pulmonary diseases. Professor Gonzalez’s research extends directly into the classroom, where she teaches the design and deployment of relevant biotechnologies that address the needs of underserved populations. Her teaching and research efforts have resulted in recognition and awards from the National Institutes of Health, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the Biomedical Engineering Society among others. Professor Gonzalez has also been awarded the Yale Provost’s Teaching Prize, the highest award at Yale that recognizes excellence in teaching.

Beyond her work as a scientist and educator, Professor Gonzalez is an entrepreneur, serving as the inventor of PremieBreathe and co-founder of AeroTherapeutics. Her combined dedication to innovation and training the next generation of leaders afforded her the opportunity to be appointed Faculty Director of Tsai CITY in 2020. This appointment was followed, in 2022, by her appointment as the Head of Davenport College, where she serves the function of CEO and cultural and intellectual lead for one of the 14 residential colleges at Yale University.  Notably, Professor Gonzalez has lead initiatives in New Haven, across the US and internationally to diversify the scientific workforce and increase public education and appreciation for science and engineering.

Professor Gonzalez earned her Ph.D. in Computational Biology at Baylor College of Medicine and a B.S. in Biological Engineering from Utah State University.
