YSER
Research Presentation Travel Prize
Regional
and national professional meetings provide an unparalleled
opportunity for the dissemination and critical analysis of
scientific discoveries. As active participants in original
research, many Yale undergraduates obtain publishable results
suitable for presentation in platform talks or in poster sessions.
For such students, the chance to present those results at
a professional meeting provides a tremendous opportunity to
obtain critical feedback and perspective from scientists outside
of the Yale community and to begin to develop scientific communication
skills that will serve them throughout their careers.
YSER
Research Presentation Travel awards are designed to provide
the financial support to allow undergraduate students to present
their publishable original research in platform talks or poster
sessions at regional and national professional meetings.

Engineering major Gautam Bahl '01 presents results of his
work on cardiac ultrasound image processing at the July 2000
Beckman Scholars Symposium in Irvine, California.
YSER
Research Presentation Travel Prize Eligibility and Application
Eligible
meetings are any regional or national professional meetings.
Students must be presenting their own original research, either
in a platform session or as the presenting author (normally the first author) on a poster
presentation. Preference is given to students presenting work
performed under the supervision of a Yale faculty member and to students who have not previously received an award.
Students are eligible for reimbursement of up to $800 in actual
receipted expenses, including meeting registration, travel
and accommodations, in accordance with University travel policies.
Travel must normally be completed prior to a student's graduation.
Applications
may be considered at any time. A pre-application should normally
be made at the time of application to the professional meeting.
Students should secure any available meeting-provided travel
support before Research Presentation Travel Prize funding
will be applied toward additional expenses. Applications should
be sent to: YSER Research Presentation Travel Prize c/o William
Segraves, Yale College Dean's Office, SSS 24.
Applications
should include the following:
1) A brief description of the research to be presented, and
how attendance at the meeting will promote the applicant's
professional development.
2)
A copy of the meeting description and application.
3)
A copy of the applicant's resume and transcript.
4)
A sealed, confidential evaluation from the faculty mentor,
including evaluation of the suitability of the student's research
for presentation, the nature of the student's contribution to the work to be presented, and the student's motivation for professional
development.
Notification
of pre-approval of travel for funding shall be made as expeditiously
as possible, so as to facilitate advance planning for travel.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the applicant should submit
all reimbursable expenses using standard University travel
requisitions, along with an abstract of the research presented.
Funding
for the YSER Research Presentation Travel Prize has been provided
by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Yale College
