Yale-HHMI Future Scientist Summer Fellowship

The Yale-HHMI Future Scientists Program seeks to promote the academic development of promising students planning research careers in the areas of biology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry and biomedical engineering.

The Future Scientist Summer Fellowship program provides support for a summer research experience under the supervision of a Yale faculty member. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated exceptional potential and commitment through their coursework and prior research experience, and to present a well-developed proposal for a research project with substantial pedagogic and scholarly merit.

Award recipients will perform research for 8-10 weeks during the summer of 2010, and will participate in summer and academic year activities of the Yale-HHMI Future Scientists Program, including journal clubs, seminars, symposia and dinners.

Eligibility and Application

Currently enrolled freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. Applicants may be pursuing a degree in any major offered by Yale College, but must be proposing research in one of the eligible areas: biology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry and biomedical engineering. Research must be supervised by a member of the Yale faculty (including the Graduate and Professional Schools), and will normally be conducted at Yale.

The application deadline is March 4, 2010, 4:30 P.M. Applications should be sent to: Yale-HHMI Future Scientists Program c/o William Segraves, Yale College Dean's Office, SSS 24. It is expected that awards will be announced by the first week of April.

Applications should include the following:

1) A completed copy of the application cover page.

2) A detailed description of the proposed research program, including the research and training objectives, and how these will prepare the applicant for further study in his or her field of interest.

3) A copy of the applicant's transcript and a detailed description of previous research experience.

4) A list of other fellowships for which the applicant has applied or intends to apply.

5) A sealed, confidential evaluation from the proposed faculty mentor, including evaluation of the qualifications and potential of the student, the scholarly and pedagogic merits of the proposed project, the student's role in the development of the proposal, and a detailed plan for the supervision of the project. In addition, the proposed mentor should include a summary of current grant support and the potential availability of grant funds to contribute to the student's summer support.

6) Applicants are permitted but not required to provide an additional letter of reference from another individual (such as a previous research mentor) familiar with the applicant's qualifications.

Applications are available online and in the Yale College Dean's Office, Room SSS 20.
