ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
& NEW HAVEN COMMITTEE

The Environmental Justice and New Haven Committee was created in 2008 and focuses on environmental awareness and activism beyond Yale University, in the greater New Haven community. Our mission is to foster relationships between students on campus and environmental activists in New Haven, including collaboration with the New Haven Environmental Justice Network, Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Connecticut, and the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK). We believe that our common interests with these groups will facilitate the exchange of ideas, strengthen the Yale-New Haven community, create mutually beneficial relationships, and double the efficacy of any environmental effort.

Our past projects have included spearheading and passing legislation on the use of green cleaning products in the City of New Haven, and helping DESK cut costs and waste by "greening" its operations. Work with city groups and the Board of Aldermen has proved a great way to learn more about non-profits and government in New Haven, and understand and be involved with the city in a unique way.

In the future, we hope to work on a college-wide bicycle-sharing program (with important ties to the non-Yale community) and an organic gardening program at prisons. We’re open to any ideas about new projects—if you have a suggestion for a project that addresses environmental issues in the New Haven community, please let us know and the group will consider tackling it!
