Green Team (formerly known as Climate Campaign) is the sub-group of YSEC that focuses on campus sustainability and student awareness of environmental issues. Green Team takes on projects based on our members’ interests, and we’re always open to suggestions. We try to highlight actions that individuals can take to help protect the environment. For example, in the past we’ve produced a “Green Grads” guide to sustainable living that was distributed to every graduating senior. This fall we tabled with posters including basic facts about issues such as offshore drilling, biofuels, cap and trade schemes, and nuclear power, which were accompanied by posters that detailed the presidential candidates’ stances on these issues. We hope that these posters inspired students to vote based on environmental priorities. For the spring, Green Team is planning a “Water Week” that will feature a film screening, panel, and other events to raise student awareness about global water quality and scarcity issues.
In addition to our educational efforts, Green Team tries to directly increase sustainability on campus. This spring we will be selling notebooks made out of salvaged paper and donating the proceeds to an environmental cause. Green Team is also working closely with the YCC to implement a campus-wide bike sharing program, which will promote sustainable transportation options on campus.
If you’re interested in joining YSEC’s Green Team, or have ideas for projects, please come to a meeting! YSEC’s regular meetings are Tuesdays at 7pm in the Dwight Hall library. Green Team also meets on Mondays at 8pm at the same location. Come to one meeting or both, or email ariel.patashnik@yale.edu or matthew.ramlow@yale.edu for more information.
