About the Slavic Chorus

The Yale Slavic Chorus is a performing group of women from a variety of cultural and academic backgrounds who share a common interest in Slavic music. Although primarily an undergraduate group, the Chorus also includes other members of the Yale New Haven community and has always been dedicated to maintaining a sense of fellowship, excitement, and musical vigor.

The Chorus was founded in 1969, the first year of undergraduate coeducation at Yale, and originally conducted by William Robbins, Jr., then a music major in Yale College and a member of the all-male Yale Russian Chorus. In 2004, we celebrated our 35th anniversary with a reunion concert that drew alumnae from all across the globe.

We are an entirely student-run, student-directed ensemble. We transcribe and arrange much of our own music, and we are always looking for new songs to sing. We are often asked if we are all from Eastern Europe - we're not! Some of us have Slavic heritage; others grew up listening to Balkan music; but many of us had never heard Slavic music before arriving at Yale.

About the Music
Most of our music hails from the countries of Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Russia and the Ukraine. The repertoire of lyrical songs borrowed from authentic Slavic choruses tell of love, work, war, country life, and sorrow. (We will gladly furnish complete texts and translations upon request.) In our performances, we strive to maintain the original mode of the presentation, which often includes dissonant harmonies, unusual rhythms, and distinctive vocal qualities which make Slavic music unique and exciting for so many listeners.

Travels of the Chorus
Unlike many of Yale's other contemporary/ modern a cappella groups, the Slavic Chorus takes its international tours to the homelands of the folk songs we sing. The goals of the trips include (but are not limited to!) adding new songs to our repertoire and to experience the culture and life of these unique countries.

 Yik!
The YIK! is the trademark sound of the Chorus. Heard in many traditional Bulgarian songs, the YIK! is a special accent passed down through oral tradition. We're not sure really how it came about or why, but if you see a Slavic Chorus member on the street, just yik and you'll get our attention right away!

 The Slavic Chorus Endowment
The Slavic Chorus endowment was established and funded in 2005 by Bridget Collins. In bringing the endowment into being, Bridget received invaluable moral support, advice and practical assistance from many Slav alumnae, especially Anne Warner and Anne Mackey.
