Parties of the Yale Political Union

Liberal Party:
The leftmost party of the Union, the Liberal Party meets weekly to discuss topics from contemporary political issues to traditional liberal philosophical tensions. Lib discussions are informal but contentious, prizing substantive discourse over competitive hostility. We understand that provocative ideas are often the most interesting, if the speaker can defend them.

Party of the Left:
The Party of the Left seeks to develop its Members as people and leaders and to develop a new vision of the American Left. As such, the Party provides an open atmosphere for rigorous debate on topics that divide the Left. Through debates, spirited discussions, and activist events, the Party is ever-conscience of its essential relevance – always striving “to bring discourse to the outside world, and the outside world to discourse.”

Progressive Party:
Who are we, you ask? Just remember, we put the "ogre" in Progressive. The Progressive Party is the Party of Relevance. Each week, the Progressive Party gathers to debate a breathtakingly urgent issue with copious amounts of friends and Prog Punch. While other parties emphasize philosophy, we Progs emphasize reality, helping to keep the collective YPU ego in check through humor, satire, and good old fashioned fun. Though we debate in a parliamentarian style, we strive to uphold the Prog ethos and to keep in mind our historic maxim: In Vino Veritas.

Independent Party:

The Independent Party evolved from the Conservative Party of the Union’s founding, maintaining many of the same institutions but changing its name to reflect the greater diversity of its members. In keeping with our motto of “Hear all Sides,” we steadfastly resist the dogmas of popular politics, and welcome members of all ideologies and walks of life to debate a broad spectrum of topics from concrete policy to abstract philosophy.

Conservative Party:
The Conservative Party occupies a right-of-center position within the Political Union but is short of the “hard right.” It takes issues seriously, discussing and debating them in a civil tone and a thoughtful, intellectually rigorous manner. It considers ideas important and logic, practicality, and pragmatism essential. It seeks guidance from the lessons of history, especially from our Western civilization, and aims to make its own debates and discussions an intellectually enriching experience for all.
