The Solnhofen limestone of Germany is probably best known for Archaeopteryx, the popular "missing link" between birds and dinosaurs, but there is also a spectacular fauna of marine invertebrates preserved in the limey muds of this Jurassic lagoon. Skeletons of shrimp and horseshoe crabs, soft-bodied jelly-fish and annelids and shelled ammonites and squids highlight the benthic fauna at Solnhofen.
