This unit traces the history of slavery in Connecticut from its origins in colonial days to its abolition in 1848. The unit is designed to provide background material for a student activity booklet. The booklet is a collection of biographical sketches and brief narratives dealing with six major institutions or periods in the history of slavery in Connecticut. The colonial period, the Black Code, social conditions in the 18th century, gradual emancipation, the Revolutionary War, and the final abolition of slavery are all represented in reading lessons followed by activities for students.
