Survival Guide for Mexicans in New Haven

Real Mexican Restaurants

While there are many so-called Mexican restaurants in New Haven, only the places below have Spanish as the official language and food that will really make you feel like you are back in Mexico. All of them have Mexican soft drinks such as Sidral, Sangria, and Jarritos.

Guadalupe la Poblanita has excellent chiles rellenos, mole, pozole, etc. They serve the most amazing beans, rice and home-made tortillas in Connecticut. It is located in Fair Haven, the Latin neighborhood. 136 Chapel St. 752-1017.

Taqueria Mexicana No. 2 has the best tacos and tamales that you can find, but you need a car to get there. They even have tacos al pastor. 702 Orange Avenue, West Haven CT. 931-8534

La Carreta Mostly for take-out, but it has a couple of tables. Menu includes burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, tacos, and huaraches. 930 State St. 624-2442.

Groceries

The newly-arrived Mexican in New Haven is often surprised to find out that almost anything can be found if you look in the right place. Sabritones, gansitos, epazote, chille guajillo, Sidral, etc...

La Supermarketa is a small grocery store that has most Mexican products. 276 Grand Avenue, 865-7936.

CTown is a big supermarket in the heart of Fair Haven, at the corner of Ferry and Grand. It has all sorts of Hispanic and Latin American products. 325 Ferry St., New Haven CT.

Taqueria Mexicana No. 2 (see above) also sells groceries.

Bakeries

Mexican bread is not so easy to find, but don't lose heart. Everything is possible if you know where to go.

Cecy's Mexican Bakery on Grand Avenue has everything you need, from conchas and bolillos to rosca de reyes. 353 Grand Avenue; 785-1160.
