Day of the Dead Altar- 2006

On November 2nd, we celebrated once more the Day of the Dead by setting up an altar on the Beinecke Plaza. This year we also gave away hot chocolate and traditional Mexican Day of the Dead bread. From 10 am to 5 pm we had about 150 people stopping by the altar. Besides honoring some of Mexico's popular cultural icons ( Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Mario Moreno "Cantinflas", and El Santo) we also paid tribute to Yale's President, Richard Levin. Here are some pictures:

Day of the Dead Altar (Día de Muertos) -2005

On November 2nd, 2005, YMSO created an altar to celebrate the Day of the Dead. The altar honored four beloved figures of 20th century Mexican culture: Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Mario Moreno "Cantinflas", and El Santo.

YMSO's altar was also dedicated to the victims of hurricanes Stan and Wilma in Mexico and Central America, and was part of a fund drive to contribute to the relief efforts.

Dinner with Jaime Serra Puche

On April 13, 2005, a dozen YMSO members had the opportunity to have dinner with Jamie Serra Puche, former Mexico's Secretary of the Treasury, Yale alumnus and member of Yale Club de Mexico. We talked about various ways to go about our shared goals of increasing the presence of Mexicans at Yale University and about the careers of Mexican Yale alumni. The dinner was held at Bar on Crown Street, where everyone enjoyed Bar's famous mashed potato pizza.

On April 6, 2005, ten YMSO members were invited to have lunch with Mexico's former President Ernesto Zedillo at Union League Cafe. Dr. Zedillo is a Yale alumnus (Ph.D., Economics) and currently directs the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. During lunch, the assistants were delighted by a violin performance which involved a very famous Red Violin.

First event: Posada!

This was our first event, held on Sunday December 12, 2004 at 4 pm at La Casa Cultural. It was a huge success; we had over 60 people merrily eating tamales and breaking the piñata! We even had some distinguished guests, including the Deans of both Yale College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

About Posadas

Posadas are a nine-day holiday beginning December 16 and ending December 24 (but we will have ours on December 12 to fit better with Yale's academic calendar).

They represent the difficulties that Saint Joseph and the Blessed Virgin faced in finding room when travelling to Bethlehem. During the posadas, groups of children go from house to house singing a traditional song requesting lodging (posada). In each house, the owner responds with refusal (also in song), until they reach the designated site for the party, where the owner recognizes Mary and Joseph and allows them to come in.

They are especially celebrated in Mexico.
