Membership - All interested Yale undergraduates are encouraged to attend YMPO Lectures. To receive a physician mentor, however, YMPO members must be chosen based on an application submitted at the beginning of each semester. Join our email list to receive notifications about the application and lectures.
Application - Due to a limited number of physicians, students interested in shadowing must complete a short application. Students will be selected based on their application, which will ask for other activities and a short essay question.
Pairing - We only admit as many students as we have available mentors. Admitted students will choose their top three choices from a list of available mentors. Students will be given their highest possible preference.
After the selection process, students will be given the name and contact info of their mentor. The physician will be notified of the name of the student that will be allowed to contact them. Physicians participating in this program will not respond to other requests for mentorship and will only mentor the specified student.
Please keep in mind the demand of popular specialties when choosing your physicians. In the past, popular specialties have included surgery, pediatrics, and Ob/Gyn.
Students that do not receive a physician will be given preference in the following semester. However, receiving a mentor will still be contingent upon successful completion of the application and adequate free time in one's schedule.
