Although Yale University and New Haven have vast resources in the medical field, it is difficult for many undergraduates to reach them. The goal of the Yale Medical Professions Outreach (YMPO) will be to bridge the gap between interested students and these immense resources.
YMPO members will gain experience with the daily work of a wide variety of physicians. Members gain first-hand clinical experience by shadowing a physician-mentor in their working environment. All interested students can also learn about medical and health-related issues through a lecture series offered every semester
YMPO maintains a group of physicians--ranging from clinicians to surgeons--willing to mentor YMPO members for an entire term. Experiences range from attending conferences to observing physicians at work in the clinic or operating room. By continuing through multiple terms, members can gain experience from a wide variety of physicians--all with their own personalities, specialties, and guidance.
Due to a limited amount of physician-mentors, students are chosen through a (not so) rigorous application process at the start of each semester.
In addition to our shadowing program, YMPO invites physicians and medical professionals to Yale to speak about topics important for anyone thinking about medicine. Lectures illuminate the personal aspects of medicine, from the unique perspective of an engaging speaker.
The lecture series, which will consist of approximately four lectures, will differ each term. We encourage all that are interested to attend!
