Yale Law & Policy Review Submissions Procedures

As of October 15, 2009, the Yale Law & Policy Review has completed article selection for Volume 28. Manuscripts sent before January 18, 2010 will not be kept on file. Please do not e-mail submissions before that date.

Articles and Essays

YLPR accepts electronic submissions only. authors are strongly encouraged to submit article and essay manuscripts electronically by e-mailing a copy in Microsoft Word format to ylpr@yale.edu. YLPR also accepts--and strongly prefers --submissions through the ExpressO system, which can be accessed at http://www.law.bepress.com/expresso.

Authors may submit articles via ExpressO or by e-mail. If choosing the latter, please write "[Author name]: Article Submission" in the subject line. Authors may only submit Essays via e-mail, and the subject line should read: "[Author name]: Essay Submission." Essays submitted through ExpressO will not be considered.

To help authors better understand the scope of YLPR's scholarship and the kinds of articles that editors are most likely to accept for publication, please note the following criteria:

1) Length: YLPR only considers Articles within a range of 10,000 words (excluding footnotes) to 35,000 words (including footnotes). Essays are designated as such at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. In general, Essays are shorter pieces of legal scholarship (around 15,000 words including footnotes). YLPR accords the same weight to Essays as to Articles but distinguishes the two on the basis of scope and length.

2) Eligible Authors: YLPR accepts Articles and Essays written by any person, regardless of education level. That is, current JD candidates from any institution are welcome to submit Articles and Essays. Students enrolled at the Yale Law School may also submit Notes, which cannot exceed 15,000 words, excluding footnotes. Past and current members of the YLPR editorial staff still enrolled at the Yale Law School may also submit Comments and Book Reviews, which cannot exceed 3000 words, excluding footnotes. The Managing Editor handles the submission process for Notes and Comments. Please consult  official notices at the Yale Law School for more details.

 3) Topics: YLPR publishes Articles and Essays (as well as Notes and Comments on a wide  variety of topics; however, the editors prefer pieces that address a combination of legal and  policy-oriented  issues as well as include a policy recommendation or critique. YLPR editors  also  favor pieces that include some discussion of, or otherwise relate to, United States law  and policy. Such scholarship might focus solely on the United States or offer a comparative  international  approach.

 4) Style : Submissions that comply with the Bluebook (18th ed.) citation guidelines are more  likely to be accepted.

Submissions Review Process

YLPR Submissions Editors review Articles and Essays on a rolling basis throughout the semester, beginning in September for the Spring Issue and beginning in January for the Fall Issue. YLPR neither reviews nor retains summer submissions. Although the editorial staff generally is unable to contact all authors who submit Articles and Essays, YLPR typically reaches decisions on strong submissions within two weeks of receipt. The full YLPR membership meets once per week to discuss Articles and Essays and ultimately to vote on which pieces to accept for publication, and the Editor-in-Chief usually contacts the author immediately upon acceptance.

Expedited Review Requests

If an author has received a formal offer of publication from another journal and would like YLPR to expedite review of that piece, please contact the Editor-in-Chief at ylpr@yale.edu. YLPR will attempt to honor all requests for expedited review for which the above information is provided.
