Weekly Quotes (Source Canadian Institute for Jewish Research)

“It’s worse than we thought. It's alarming that the actual production was underreported by a third.” —Gary Milhollin, the director of the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control, commenting on the recent International Atomic Energy Agency report which stated that UN inspectors have uncovered some 200kg of low-enriched uranium that Iran had failed to declare. Iran now possess 1000kg of fissile material. Meanwhile, Iranian and Russian technicians have successfully tested Iran’s first nuclear power plant. (Jerusalem Post, Feb. 20; Washington Post, Feb. 25)

“We in Canada…see the growth of a new antisemitism, the antisemitism predicated on the notion that the Jews alone have no right to a homeland.… And in that sense anti-Zionism is antisemitism. Our government clearly understands this….
“[O]ur government takes a zero tolerance approach to expressions of antisemitism in the public square. There are organisations in Canada, as in Britain, that receive their share of media attention and public notoriety, but who at the same time as expressing hateful sentiments expect to be treated as respectable interlocutors in the public discourse. I think, for example, of the president of an organisation called the Canadian Islamic Congress, Mohamed Elmasry, who notoriously said three years ago on live television that all Israelis over the age of 18 can legitimately be killed…. I think as well of the leader of the Canadian Arab Federation, who notoriously circulated an e-mail when my colleague, our shadow Foreign Minister, Bob Rae, was running for the leadership of his party, calling on people to vote against Mr. Rae because of Arlene Perly Rae’s involvement in Canada’s Jewish community. The same individual…just last week circulated…videos which include propaganda, including the inculcation to hatred, of children by organisations such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

“These and other organisations are free within the confines of our law and consistent with our traditions of freedom of expression, to speak their mind, but they should not expect to receive resources from the state….” —Canadian n Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, addressing the London Conference on Combating Antisemitism. A declaration pledging to combat antisemitism was signed on behalf of all participating nations. (National Post, Feb. 18)

What these men intended to bring about was a violent and deadly statement of intent that would have truly global impact. It is the crown's case that these men were actively engaged in a most deadly plan designed to bring about what would have been, if they had been successful, a civilian death toll from an act of terrorism on an almost unprecedented scale.” —British prosecutor Peter Wright, in opening statements at the trial of  British Islamic terrorists who plotted to simultaneously blow up eight transatlantic airliners, using liquid explosives hidden in soft drink bottles. Police found martyrdom videos recorded by six of the men, warning non-believers of retaliation for U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. “This is revenge for the acts of the U.S.A. in the Muslim lands and their accomplices such as the British and the Jews, were the recorded words of one of the alleged terrorists, Umar Islam. (Canwest, Feb. 18)

Why do we have to hold President Bashir or the Sudanese government responsible when the Darfur problem was caused by outside parties, and Tel Aviv (Israel), for example, is behind the Darfur crisis?” —Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, the current African Union president, claiming that Israel and the Jews are responsible for the continuing conflict in Darfur. “It is not a secret. We have found evidence proving clearly that foreign forces are behind the Darfur problem and are fanning its fire. We discovered that some of the main leaders of the Darfur rebels have opened offices in Tel Aviv and hold meetings with the military there to add fuel to the conflict fire.” (Jerusalem Post, Feb. 24)

We adhere strongly to the principle of freedom of speech and support healthy debate. We also encourage members of the university to undertake such debate in a spirit of mutual respect. It is important that people feel able to express their views, and it is important that individuals and groups feel free from misrepresentation and harassment. In this specific case, we are mindful of the sensitivities and will respond to the concerns of individuals or groups if they believe their rights or university regulations and codes of practice are being infringed.” —Statement issued by the University of York, explaining why the British university would not be disciplining Andrew Collingwood for posting an antisemitic photograph on a Facebook. “We are not here to defend Andrew Collingwood's position and have not done so. We do not see that as our role. It did seem to us that some people would find the picture offensive. As soon as we pointed this out to him, he took the picture off the Web site,” read the statement. (Jerusalem Post, Feb. 25)
