Pharmacy/Prescriptions

Pharmacy/Prescriptions

The Pharmacy is staffed by pharmacists who work closely with Yale Health Plan (YHP) clinicians to assure that the safest and most effective drug therapies are prescribed. The Pharmacy maintains complete and confidential patient drug histories which allow our pharmacists to alert patients and clinicians to possible drug interactions, drug reactions, and drug recalls.

Using the YUHS Pharmacy

  • Prescription refill call line
To use our 24-hour prescription refill line, call the regular Pharmacy number 203-432-0033; the message will guide you through the procedure. Press 1 to access the refill line. Please call refills in at least 24 hours in advance. We need a minimum of two days notice (three days on weekends) on all special order prescriptions. Note: Prescriptions are returned to stock after 10 days if not picked up.
  • Prescription drop off box
The prescription drop off box is located outside the Pharmacy. Prescriptions dropped in the box will usually be filled within one business day. If a medication is prescribed that you do not need immediately but will need in the future, please drop it in the prescription drop off box. Indicate that the prescription should be held in your file until you need to fill it.
  • Maintenance prescriptions
If you have more than one maintenance prescription (those that you take regularly), the Pharmacy staff can help you coordinate prescription quantities so that the medications last the same number of days - eliminating extra trips to the Pharmacy.
  • Tax Reports and Prescription Profiles
All requests for prescription medication printouts needed for tax purposes and flexible benefits options are processed by the YUHS Health Information Services (formerly known as Medical Records). To make a request, you must fill out an Authorization for Use or Disclosure of Protected Health Information form. The authorization forms are available in the Health Information Services (formerly known as Medical Records) on the lower level of YUHS or can be downloaded from the YUHS website at www.yale.edu/uhs. Please note that you cannot make this request for another member except in the case of a minor child, when the parent or legal guardian must sign.
  • Benefit year ends:
    Students:
    August 31
    Retirees: December 31
For Employees (faculty and staff): June 30

If you are not sure when your benefit year ends, consult Member Services at 203-432-0246. Below are some Pharmacy policies to be aware of, and tips to make the best use of the Pharmacy and your Pharmacy benefits between now and the end of your applicable benefit year.

The YHP benefit year ends at the end of the corresponding business day listed above. To be credited to the current benefit year, your prescriptions must be filled by that date. This means that if you call in a prescription before the end of your applicable benefit year end, but do not pick it up within 10 days it will be returned to stock. The prescription will then need to be reprocessed and the cost will be charged to the new benefit year.

Prescriptions at the YHP Pharmacy should always be picked up within 10 days after the date they are filled. Any prescription not picked up within that period will be returned to stock.
