Our services

Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, this fully-licensed inpatient unit offers evaluation and treatment of medical conditions which do not require highly specialized hospital services. Supported by in-house radiology, pharmacy and physical therapy services, and with a physician here in the building around the clock, the ICF provides Yale Health Plan (YHP) members with timely and responsive care for a variety of medical problems.

The ICF is not just an "infirmary," but a unique facility. Our philosophy is to provide a restful and healthy environment which allows YHP members to remain a functional part of the University as much as possible while they are receiving care. Our services include:

  • admission for continued care of patients transferred from the hospital after surgery or serious illness, allowing for smoother transition from hospital to home
  • admission for pre-surgical preparation as indicated
  • overnight stays for individuals who need additional recovery time after one-day surgery
  • admission directly from any YHP clinic or from the Urgent Care Department for further evaluation, diagnosis or treatment for a range of common medical problems
  • outpatient procedures (i.e. the administration of intravenous medication) which require skilled medical services but not an overnight stay
  • oncology services, including the administration of chemotherapy
  • physical therapy for inpatients

Coordinated care

A health care team consisting of your primary care clinician, the ICF nurses and any appropriate specialty clinicians will work with you and your family, or others you designate, to design a plan of care. In addition, if your condition requires specialized services such as dietary planning or physical therapy, YHP staff from those areas will also be involved. ICF staff will also coordinate care that may be required when you return home, and will assist with scheduling follow-up appointments, transferring medical records and other tasks essential to your full recovery.

Medications

All medications must be prescribed by the physician in charge of your admission. If you bring any prescription or over the counter medication, please give them to the nursing staff for safekeeping during your stay. At your request, prescriptions ordered for you to use when you return home will be delivered to the YHP Pharmacy. The Pharmacy staff will have them filled and ready at the time of your departure.

Advance Directives

The 1991 Patient Self Determination Act, requires that we ask whether you have chosen a person to make health care decisions for you if you are unable to make them yourself. You will receive an information packet at the time of admission, explaining this in further detail. Our staff is available to assist you in completing this form, which becomes part of your YHP medical record. If at any time you want to change the information on it, contact the Health Information Services (formerly known as Medical Records) at 203-432-0062.

Appointments

Admission to the ICF must be authorized by a YHP clinician. While you are in the ICF, your care will be managed by the physician who admitted you as well as by your primary care physician. During your stay, you will be seen daily by your primary care clinician. You may also be seen by your surgeon post operatively and/or by any specialist who has been treating you for the problem for which you have admitted.

FAQs

  • Are meals provided?
Yes, a menu from which you can make selections is available for each meal. If your medical condition requires a special diet, your food will be prepared in accordance with those instructions. If you have other dietary needs (such as Kosher or vegetarian), please let your nurse know upon your admission and the ICF dietary staff will be able to accommodate you. Visitors are welcome to bring you food after checking with the nurse to see if you are under any dietary restrictions. A refrigerator for patient use is located in the ICF day room.
  • Will I have access to a phone?
All rooms are equipped with telephones and cable television.
Each bed has an independent telephone number, which you should give to those who want to call you. You may make local calls at no charge. For local calls outside of the University, dial 9 and then the number. You may make long distance calls by using a calling card or calling collect. Incoming calls can be received until 10:00 pm.
  • What are the visiting hours?
Visiting hours are from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm every day. You may make special arrangements with the charge nurse if there are individuals who cannot come during those hours. Visitors who arrive outside those hours may also check in with the security guard on the first floor; the guard will contact the charge nurse, who will also consult with you.
  • Are there members of the clergy available to visit me during my stay?
Representatives of many faiths are available for consultation and counseling. For more information, call the chaplain's service at (203) 432-1128, or ask a staff member to contact someone for you.
