The Wednesday Lunchtime Summer Soup Kitchen (WLSSK) started in 2008 as there was no lunch available to the homeless population of New Haven on Wednesday afternoons in the summertime. Volunteers prepare peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Tuesday evenings at the Slifka Center and distribute them on the New Haven Green on Wednesday afternoons. St. Thomas More Catholic Chapel & Center donates sandwich-making supplies (e.g. sandwich bags, plastic knives), while the Community Soup Kitchen provides food for the project from the Connecticut Food Bank.
The WLSSK is a fun opportunity for Yale students in New Haven for the summer and interested community members to engage with the city and with issues of homelessness. The job of co-coordinating the WLSSK takes about five hours per week and is compatible with most other summer employment, coursework or research.
