Welcome to the 2014-2015 Season
August 24, 2014
Dear YFSC Members,
It's almost time for the new skating season to start. Attached is the new session subscription form. Please complete it and return with your check to Mary D'Agostino as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please email us at email@example.com.
Also attached please find a 2014-15 YFSC membership application form. If you did not do so earlier this summer, it is time to renew your YFSC and USFS (U.S. Figure Skating) memberships.
We are excited to announce our program for the 2014-15 season. On the recommendation of our new Basic Skills Director, John Cain, we are making some changes to strengthen our program. Our goal is to help our skaters progress more rapidly and be better prepared for our Third Annual Basic Skills Competition in January and our spring year-end celebration. The biggest changes are:
Our sessions will begin on Sunday, September 14th. Please refer to the attached calendar. Our first Saturday session will be the following week, September 20th.
We will have two special Registration and Information sessions this year:
Three Terms: We will have 3 eight-week terms this year: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Skaters who sign up and pay for all 3 in advance will receive a discount.
Longer Learn-to-Skate Lessons: Our Learn-to-Skate program includes Snowplow Sam, Basic Skills Levels 1-8, Adult Levels 1-6, and Freeskate Levels 1-2. We will have 40 minutes of instruction, followed by 10 minutes of free time. During the free time, we will plan some fun activities, and coaches will be available to speak with skaters and parents individually about skater progress.
Time for Private Lessons: Skaters are encouraged to engage coaches for private or semi-private lessons and to register for ice time during the Practice Ice sessions. During these sessions, skaters on Basic Skills levels 1-8 must be supervised by a coach at all times. More information about our coaches and lessons is found on the Coaches Page.
New Performance Preparation Class: On Saturday mornings after Learn-to-Skate, we will have a Performance Preparation class for skaters at Basic Skills level 4 and above. We will kick off the fall term with "Artistry in Motion", studying music, choreography, and the basics of body alignment, movement, and line. In the winter, we will have "Competition Preparation" to introduce skaters to routines and procedures for our Third Annual Basic Skills Competition. In the spring term, the group will learn a show number for our annual year-end celebration.
Bridge Group- Sunday 5:00 to 5:25: This is an introduction to the various disciplines of skating to moves-in-the-field, freestyle, ice dance, and synchronized skating. It is appropriate for those who are working on Basic Skills levels 5 to 8 (or the equivalent), as well as those who have passed Basic 8.
Ice Dance Group - Sunday 5:25 to 5:50: This class will introduce ice dance concepts and the first several set-pattern dances. Anyone who watched Meryl Davis and Charlie White in the Olympics knows what an exciting sport ice dancing can be. Yale FSC has always been a club strong in dance, and we hope to keep this tradition going.
New Times for advanced "Practice Ice" sessions: Our former "MFD" sessions (Combined Moves, Freestyle, and Dance) - are now scheduled in 25 minute blocks. Our most advanced skaters are encouraged to register for the earliest blocks on Saturday morning and the later ones on Sunday evening. Those enrolled in Practice Ice sessions will be allowed to make-up missed sessions during any another time block, as space permits. Make-ups must be completed during the same term as the day missed.
Make-up policy for Learn-to-Skate Sessions: Skaters may arrange with John Cain to make up missed sessions. Make-ups must be completed during the same term as the day missed.
Third Annual Basic Skills Competition. Be sure to put Monday, January 19, 2015 on your calendar - we'll need plenty of volunteers that day. If you can help then or any other time, we'd welcome your assistance, so please let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or speaking with any board member.
