Sailing
Q: Do I need to take lessons at YCYC before
going sailing on my own?
A. We recommend that new YCYC members take the 420 Level 1 before sailing;
it includes an orientation as well as a demonstration of how to rig a 420
Dinghy. If you have substantial prior sailing experiences we only require
that stewards give you a rigging/sailing test before your first sail.
Q: Do I need to wear a life jacket when sailing?
A: YCYC requires everyone in a boat, or on the dock) to be wearing a lifejacket.
Everyone under the age of 12 is required by law to wear a life jacket. We
have lifejackets available for use.
Q: Do I need to be able to swim?
A: YES. Each sailor under the age of 21
must pass a swim test. Each card holder 21 or older is required to
sign a document at the Sailing Pavilion affirming that he/she can swim 100
yds and tread water for 10 minutes.
Q. I'm bringing my little brother along with
me. Does he have to pass the swim test?
A. Any YCYC member who signs out a boat is responsible
for ensuring that her guests can swim.
Q. What should I wear to the lessons?
A. You should wear clothes that you don't mind getting a
little wet. There is always the chance you will capsize so you may want to
bring along a dry change of clothes. Please wear shoes that provide full
coverage, (ie. sneakers) with a good rubber sole. If you wear glasses, please
tie them on with string from the front desk or with your own sports leash.
