Bring Back ROTC
In March of 2004, the Yale College Republicans started a petition campaign calling for the return of the Reserve Officer Training Corps to the Yale campus. ROTC was forced to leave in 1971 as a result of restrictions placed on the program by the University; Yale dictated that all students, irrespective of circumstances, must be given honorable discharges by the military should they wish to terminate their involvement. These criteria were far above those levied by other schools and directly contradicted existing protocols; the Army could not adhere to the guidelines and has not returned. Currently, Yale students must travel all over Connecticut to fulfill their ROTC requirements; while many undertake the significant time commitments in order to participate in the program, there is a large number of students who, despite wishing to serve America, are unable to. The YCR aims to have 1000 students sign a petition to Bring Back ROTC and to ask the University Administration to give credit for Military Science courses.
The War on Terrorism
The Yale College Republicans have planned a series of rallies aimed to demonstrate the importance of the War on Terrorism and the policies of the President towards winning this conflict. Through education materials and speakers, the strengths of the Bush Doctrine are highlighted, and the destruction waged by terrorists throughout the world is exposed. By coming together to understand the magnitude of the terrorist threat, students are imparted with a strong sense of urgency. With a history of leadership in National Security, the Republican Party is the perfect organization to stress the merit of current ventures and the necessity of future global involvement.
Issues Forums
The Yale College Republicans sponsors a number of events throughout the year aimed to spread awareness of conservative issues and Republican policies. From important social issues such as Affirmative Action, to the economic and education policies of President Bush, the organization believes that the key to political action is knowledge. By informing members of the Yale community as to the merit behind various Republican policies, we hope to better promote the ideals and vision of the party on campus.
Policy Debates
By arranging discussion sessions with campus organizations across the political spectrum and expounding the overall benefits of Republican policies, the YCR seeks to demonstrate the virtues of our party in active and competitive debate. From the economy, to foreign policy, no topic is off the table; members look forward to discussions with students of other political backgrounds. Debates have been sponsored by organizations such as the Yale Political Union and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies.
Republicans in the Media
The Yale College Republicans supports the efforts of members to write for local newspapers, participate in radio shows, and make television appearances. Under the auspices of the organization, students have written dozens of editorials, appeared on the national news and been involved with media across the country. The organization helps members in all steps of the writing process: from editing work, to helping contact media sources, the YCR recognizes the importance to increasing the exposure of Republican policy stances.
Speakers
The Yale College Republicans invites a number of speakers each year to the Yale campus; representing a wide-range of backgrounds, these individuals speak both to members of the organization and to the Yale community at large. The Yale College Republicans works to cosponsor events with other groups, as well as Republican and conservative organizations at the state and national level.
CPAC
Each year, the Yale College Republicans sends representatives to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. This past year, CPAC featured speakers such as Vice President Richard Cheney, Alan Keyes, Ann Coulter, Bill Frist, and Zell Miller, In addition to this, there were workshops and seminars aimed to improve the running of Republican groups. Members also greatly enjoyed the trip to Washington and spending time with conservatives from all over the country.
State Events
As a member of the Connecticut Union of College Republicans, the YCR participates in a number of state-run events. The highlight of the year is the convention, run each April, in which hundreds of students gather to discuss issues and learn about future initiatives. The YCR works with other universities to help bring speakers to Connecticut, and joins with the CUCR to help with major campaigning efforts.
