Attention: Professor Meg Urry, Director, Yale Center for Astronomy & Astrophysics

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position

with Profs. Meg Urry and Paolo Coppi, at the Yale Center for

Astronomy and Astrophysics, to work on blazars and other AGN

as part of a collaboration involving Profs. Laura Maraschi

(Brera Observatory, Milan), Paolo Padovani (STScI), Rita Sambruna

(George Mason U.), Sally Laurent-Muehleisen (LLNL & UC Davis),

Giovanni Fossati (Rice U), and Felix Aharonian (MPIK Heidelberg).

The successful applicant may choose among several different projects

involving multiwavelength observations of blazars and extended

extragalactic jets (using Chandra, HST, SIRTF, and ground-based

optical/IR); theoretical modeling of spectral energy distributions;

analyses of jet power and demographics; and carrying out and

interpreting blazar surveys. The postdoc may, if s/he so wishes,

spend some time at the collaborators' institutions. Time is also

available for independent research.

The new Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics offers a

stimulating scientific environment, convenient to New York City

and Boston. Yale faculty are involved in many extragalactic

programs, including the large multiwavelength surveys GOODS,

Palomar-QUEST, and the Calan-Yale Deep-Wide Survey. Yale

astrophysicists have access to premier observing facilities

including WIYN and Chilean telescopes (through the Yale-Univ.

de Chile collaboration).

Applicants must hold a PhD in astronomy, physics, or a related field by

summer 2003, and preferably have experience with data reduction and

analysis. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable for up

to 3 years depending on performance. Applications consist of

a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, and a

brief statement of research interests and expertise, as well as

a description of how those interests relate to the study of blazars

and AGN. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of

recommendation to be sent directly to the same address (given

above). Complete applications received by December 15 will

receive full consideration. Women and members of minority groups

are strongly encouraged to apply.

Attention: Dr. Pieter van Dokkum

Applicants are invited for a post-doctoral research position at the

Yale Astronomy Department to work in collaboration with Prof. Pieter van

Dokkum on studies of the formation and evolution of massive galaxies.

The successful applicant will focus on the analysis, interpretation,

and/or modeling of ground- and space-based imaging and spectroscopic

observations, in part obtained through the Yale-Universidad de Chile

Joint Program. Part of the successful applicant's time will be

available for independent research.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in astronomy or related field by date of

appointment. Technical expertise should preferably include experience

with IRAF and data analysis. The appointment will be for two years,

renewable for an additional year based on satisfactory performance and

continued funding.

Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of

publications, and a (1-2 page) description of research accomplishments

and relevant technical experience, to the above address. They should

also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly

to the same address. Completed applications received by 31 December

will receive full consideration. Yale University particularly

encourages applications from women and members of underrepresented

minority groups. AAE/EOE.
