Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to get an appointment?
After a brief telephone discussion about current concerns, one of our intake clinicians will call you within 2-3 days of your initial contact. They will set up a time for you to come into the clinic for an intake evaluation

What does the evaluation consist of?
The evaluation consists of an interview with one of our intake clinicians. You will have the opportunity to talk about what prompted you to seek help at this time. You will also be asked a series of questions to screen for a variety of symptoms that clients commonly present with at our clinic. This interview allows us to find the best therapist for your needs and provides your therapist with a thorough understanding of your concerns in order to provide appropriate help.

How long will it be before I can begin treatment?
After the intake interview, you will be assigned to a therapist. This process typically takes 1-2 weeks, depending on the availability of our therapists.

How long will treatment take?
Most people make substantial progress toward their goals in 8 to 15 sessions. Some people who are dealing with particularly complex issues may wish to continue therapy for 20 or more sessions. After the intake interview, your therapist will be able to provide you with an estimate of how long it may take for you to adequately address your concerns.

How long will each session be?
Therapy is most effective when it occurs on a weekly basis. Sessions are typically 50 minutes.

Are services covered by insurance?
Psychological services may be covered by your employer's extended heath benefits or employee assistance plans. If you are a Yale employee, the Yale Health Plan will reimburse you for $40 per session. Given that our fees are very affordable, many people pay privately for services.

Can I request a more advanced therapist?
We do our best to match you with a therapist who will best fit your needs. Please discuss your concerns with the intake clinician during the intake interview, and we will do our best to find the best therapist match for you.

What if I don't feel comfortable with my therapist?
It is very important that you feel at ease and comfortable with your therapist. If you do not feel comfortable, we encourage you to bring this up with your therapist. If you are not able to do this, please contact our clinic director and we would be happy to discuss the possibility of assigning you to a new therapist.

Can I request a male/female therapist?
Yes, you may. We will do our best to accommodate your preferences.

Do you offer medication?
We do not prescribe medication; however, if we feel you could benefit from medication and you would like to pursue this option, we will refer you to a psychiatrist in the community.

What services are we unable to offer?
Our clinic does not have a full-time counseling staff, psychiatrist, or emergency services. As such, we cannot provide services when there is a risk of frequent or severe crisis or involvement with the law. We do not provide services for the following:

  • Assessments for legal issues (e.g., capacity/child custody and access) or court- mandated treatment
  • Problems associated with a high risk of legal involvement (e.g., violence, criminal behavior)
  • Primary treatment for alcohol and substance abuse/dependence
  • Psychotic disorders

Can you make referrals within the community?
If our clinic is not the appropriate place for you to receive help, we will do our best to refer you to appropriate services.
