Tips 'N Tricks:
Recording in Room B11
Note: There is a sign-up sheet on the door of Room B11. You may checkout a key for Room B11 from the main Department office. Keys checked out overnight are due back the following morning.
- Launch Cubase. Verify that the Firewire 410 is the current audio
device in Cubase. Go to Devices -> Device Setup -> VST Audio System. The Firewire 410 should be listed as the current ASIO Driver.
- If you will be mixing to stereo, skip to the next step. If you
will be mixing to surround sound, change your VST Outputs setting. Go
to Devices -> VST Connections and choose the Outputs tab. In the
Presets menu, choose "B11 5.1".
- Connect your microphone or instrument to Input One (on the left
side). Check that setting of the Mic/Line button is appropriate for
your input type. If you are recording in instrument via the 1/4" direct-in jack (e.g. a guitar or synth) the button should be
depressed. The button should not be depressed for a microphone
plugged into the XLR jack.
- The Pad button should never be depressed unless you are recording
an extremely loud source.
- If you are using a condenser microphone (e.g. the Nady), make sure
the phantom power button is depressed on the right side of the
Firewire 410. If you are using a dynamic microphone (e.g. the Shure
SM-57) phantom power is not necessary.
- Create a mono audio track in the Cubase project window. Set its
input to Left - Stereo In.
- Audition your audio source in order to check your levels. If the
red Clip light is lighting up on the Firewire 410 or your input level
is going into the red in the Cubase mixer, lower your level on the
Firewire 410 input knob. Set your levels as high as possible without
the risk of clipping during your recording.
