A hands-on survey of speculative musical thought, with a special emphasis on traditions of an algebraic character.  Introductory work in abstract algebra and psychoacoustics, leading to models of tuning systems, scales, and harmoonic structure.  Readings in translation from Plato, Ptolemy, Huygens, Newton, Helmholtz, and others.

The impact of the globalization of technology via the expansion of the Internet, along with the interdisciplinarization of the arts, is having a profound effect on the arts throughout the world.  "Interfaced Culture: Globalization, Interdisciplinary Arts, and Interactive, Real-Time Performance"  investigates critically interactivity in relation to global connectivity.  The following topics will be addressed: historical perspectives on the evolution of technology in sound and multi-media; the aesthetic shifts engendered by new media; multi-media authoring systems; interactive performance environments; multi-site installations; and Internet technologies.  The work of artists whose application of interactive technologies facilitates cross-cultural exchange in the interdisciplinary arts will also be studied.

Music and Multimedia Art is a study of the creative interaction among music, multimedia, and technology, and the research, performance, and pedagogical impact of that focus.  Examination of hardware and software and their integration.  Topics include: authoring languages and  hypertext and hypermedia issues in software design, development, and use.

Music, Multimedia, Technology and Research is a study of the creative interaction between music, multimedia, and technology and the research, performance, and pedagogical impact of that focus.  The seminar examines hardware and software and their integration, overviews authoring languages, and considers hypertext and hypermedia issues in software design, development, and use.
