Fall 2008 YalMusT Workshop Series
The YalMusT workshop series is open to all members of the Yale student community. We are currently designing the workshop series topics for this year and are accepting requests for subjects. If you have a subject that you would like us to cover in a workshop, please e-mail Scott Petersen.

Recording, Editing and Sequencing Workshops
If you are interested in attending either of the following workshops, please email yalmust@yale.edu and indicate the date you would like to attend. These workshops are designed more for those not currently enrolled in any of the department's music technology classes. While persons enrolled in music tech classes are invited to participate, most subjects will have already been covered in said classes.
Introduction to Recording Equipment, Concepts, and Techniques:
Workshop Structure
- Familiarize you with the specific function of some equipment available to you through YalMusT and the DMCA
- Simultaneously introduce or reinforce certain basic principles of digital recording, recording technology, and basic acoustics and psychoacoustics.
- Demonstrate the use of the NT-4 microphone, M-Audio FireWire 410 Audio Interface, and Logic 8 (basic project and track creation, recording, saving.)

Introduction to Sound-File Editing:
Workshop Structure
- Reinforce DSP principles introduced in recording workshop and discuss more in-depth, including file formats and codecs, DSP theoretical subjects (Nyquist Theorem, distortion, amplitude disambiguation, subject-specific jargon), etc.
- Introduce sound-file editing programs Wave Editor and Audacity: downloading (if applicable), project set-up, saving, more.
- Brief discussion of Logic 8 built-in sound editor.
- Specific sound-editing subjects: destructive versus non-destructing editing, adding faces, envelopes, normalization, effects, and more.
