Frequently Asked Questions

Ear Q: Why do I get a QuickTime error message '404 - not found'?

A: ViCH will not stream media to computers located outside the Yale network. Please ensure that you are connecting to ViCH via a 'yale.edu' domain computer (i.e. computer clusters, dorm rooms, YalMusT, etc). Off-campus students may connect to the Yale network via VPN (Virtual Private Networking). Detailed VPN setup instructions can be found here. Note that VPN requires a valid Yale netID and password, as well as a fast Internet connection. If you are connected to the Yale network and still receive this error message, it is possible we are in the process of updating your course listing. Your selection should be online soon!

Q: Why do I get a QuickTime error message '415 - unsupported media type'?

A: Please ensure you are using QuickTime 7.16. Many of the files on ViCH are encoded according to high-quality MP4 AAC audio standards. Such files must be played using the latest version of the QuickTime player. You may download the latest version of QuickTime from Apple.

Q: I'm connecting from campus or with VPN, but I'm still getting the above errors. What else could be the problem?

A: Hardware and software firewalls can prevent media from streaming properly. For example, Windows Firewall could be blocking your computer from connecting to the ViCH media server. Also, many wireless routers have built-in firewalls. Please ensure that your QuickTime player can pass through any active firewalls; refer to your operating system software and networking hardware documentation for more information, or contact a Computing Assistant for help.
