Music 390b:  Real-time Performance Group Project

 

 

Guidelines

 

1. Plan your Real-time Performance Group Project 

 

a.      Groups must have at least three people, but no more than five people.

 

b.      You may choose the general aesthetic and conceptual approaches for your Real-time Performance Group Project.

 

c.     Choose one or more of the real-time performance conceptual paradigms for your Real-time Performance Group Project:

 

1.     A narrative/quasi-narrative performed in a structured fashion or as an improvisation.

2.     A musical piece with a video background performed in a structured fashion or as an improvisation.

3.     A video piece with a musical background performed in a structured fashion or as an improvisation.

4.     Equal parts music and video performed in a structured fashion or as an improvisation.

5.     Some combination of the above.

6.     Technological subversion of either one or more of the above.

7.     Design your own real-time performance conceptual paradigm.

 

2. Work on your Real-time Performance Group Project in class/lab as designated.

3. Specific Requirements for the Real-time Performance Group Project

 

e.      Use the following source clips and data types.

 

1.     Required use of "original, pre-prepared" audio and image/video clips.

2.     Required use of "original, pre-prepared" MIDI sequences.

3.     Required use of "real-time input" of MIDI data.

4.     Required use of "real-time, processed" audio, OR MIDI, OR image/video data.

5.     Optional use of "real-time input" of audio and image/video data.

6.     Optional use of "plundered" audio, OR MIDI, OR image/video data.

 

f.     Use at least five of the following software programs.

 

1.     Cubase SE/SL/SX 3.0

2.     Reason 3.0

3.     Recycle 2.1

4.     Metasynth Pro 4.0

5.     radiaL 1.0

6.     FinalCut Pro 5.0

7.     Motion 1.0

8.     MAX/MSP/Jitter 4.5.5

9.     Pluggo 3.2

10.     Synful Orchestra VST

 

g.      Use at least two of the following controllers.

 

1.     MIDI keyboard - Midiman Ozone or Ozonic Keyboard Controller

2.     MIDI percussion controller - HPD-15 Roland Percussion Controller

3.     Game pad - Belkin Nostromo N45 Game Pad

4.     Pen tablet - Wacom Intuos3 Pen Tablet

5.     MIDI foot pedal - Behringer MIDI Foot Controller

 

h.     Use of 5.1 Surround Sound via MAX/MSP/Jitter 4.5.5

 

i.     Part 1 - Use sub-patches from the Audio & MIDI examples; Option 1A, 1B, or 1C.

 

j.     Part 2 - Use sub-patches from the Synthesis & MIDI examples; Option 2A, 2B, or 2C.

 

k.     Part 3 - Use sub-patches from the Image/Video & MIDI examples; Option 3A, 3B, or 3C.

 

l.     Design, implement and use your group's Main Master Performance Patch in MAX/MSP/Jitter 4.5.5.

 

m.     Time requirement: 6:00 to 10:00 minutes in length.

 

n.     Extra Credit: use additional sub-patches, OR code some of your own.

 

4. Submit your Real-time Performance Group Project Proposal on Tuesday, Feb. 7th.

 

o.      Post an .rtf document of your Real-time Performance Group Project Proposal in your group's folder on the Musi390b Group Projects site.

 

5. Present your Real-time Performance Group Project Work-In-Progress Report on Tuesday, Feb. 28th.

 

p.      Your presentation must include:

1.     An overview of your aesthetic and conceptual approaches to your Real-time Performance Group Project.

2.     A summary of your progress working on your Real-time Performance Group Project.

3.     A listening (audio CD) or viewing (DVD) of sub-mixes from your Real-time Performance Group Project.

4.     Demonstration of your Main Master Performance Patch MAX/MSP/Jitter 4.5.5. Everything must work!

 

6. Perform your finished Real-time Performance Group Project on Tuesday, the assigned date.

 

q.     Present a complete performance of your Real-time Performance Group Project.

 

7. Submit your finished Real-time Performance Group Project Materials on Tuesday, the assigned date.

 

r.     Your final submission of materials must include:

 

1.     A final essay describing your finished Real-time Performance Group Project results posted as an .rft document

          on the Musi390b Group Projects site.

2.     A data CD-R or DVD-R with ALL of your various project materials archived on it, and, that's fully functional!

3.     Submit to Dr. A on Tuesday, the assigned date.
