Assignment 1 (10%)

Inspecting Audio Properties and Simple Editing.

Ringtones.

While using simple editing techniques, create two cell-phone ringtones.

Ringtone 1. Create a continuous approximately 15-second long ringtone using materials from your field recording.

Ringtone 2. Create an approximately 20-second long ringtone, consisting of one sample and its repeated versions. The sample may be created from any audio file or your field recording. Using editing and processing techniques learnt in the class, make each repetition different. The number of repetition depends on the nature of your project, however, there should be at least three.

In this project:

1. Edit and process your audio using the Wave Editor and Frequency software.

2. Select at least 5 techniques from the following list and apply them to your ringtones: fade in, fade out, copy and paste, change speed, change pitch, repeat, reverse, invert, insert silence and spectral brush.

3. Save and submit your ringtones in two versions: as AIFF and MP3 files.

4. The ringtones should be written in a style of soundscape or music concrete.

Due Monday of Week 5.

Submission:
1. Email your ringtones in the following formats to your TA:
FirstName.LastName-Ringtone1.mp3
FirstName.LastName-Ringtone1.aiff
FirstName.LastName-Ringtone2.mp3
FirstName.LastName-Ringtone2.aiff

2. Post the your ringtones (only the mp3 files) on your blog.

3. If possible, transfer your ringtones on your phone and bring them to the class on Monday.

NOTE: When working on your assignment, take notes! You can post these on your blog.
