RSS and blog reader portlets
This portlet allows you to view an outside RSS feed in your YaleInfo layout.
What is an RSS feed?
RSS (“Really Simple Syndication”) feeds are content feeds that some Web sites make available. They usually contain news headlines, blog updates, top ten lists, or other information that changes frequently and can easily be formatted as a list.
For an example of what an RSS feed looks like, see the existing 'News Headlines' portlet. This portlet works in the same way as the 'RSS/Blog Reader' portlet, except that you must select the feed you'd like to view from a list of major news sources; the 'RSS/Blog Reader' lets you specify any available RSS feed.
Where can I find RSS feeds?
If you don't know of an existing RSS feed but would like to test out this portlet, there are sites on the Web that list available RSS feeds. One such site is www.syndic8.com; you can find others using a search engine like Google. You might also check with your favorite Web sites and news sources to see if they provide an RSS feed.
To add the RSS/Blog Reader portlet to your layout:
Find the URL for an RSS feed that you would like to see on your portal pages. You can find RSS feeds from most major news Web sites. For example, these major news organizations offer multiple RSS feed on specific topic areas:
The URL for a typical RSS feed will look very much like an ordinary Web link URL, except that RSS feed links will typically end in a file extension like .rss, .rdf, or .xml. Copy the URL for your new RSS feed to have it handy for these next steps:
- Use the "Options" pull-down menu at the right of the YaleINFO header, and select "More content."
- Select the "News" category from the left column, and then select the "My News Reader" portlet to add to your page.
- Click the "Add to my page" button to add the new reader to your current YaleInfo page.
- Click the "Edit" button in the portlet title bar of your new reader portlet to paste in the link to your RSS feed, and to customize your RSS with the the number of news items you would prefer.
Viewing YaleInfo content within other portals you use
If you use a portal other than YaleInfo, you may be able to configure it to display some YaleInfo news and announcements that use RSS (“Really simple syndication”) to provide news items. The same RSS feeds that you use in YaleInfo can also be used in Google, Yahoo, YaleStation, and other portals and RSS readers.
Note that some of the portlet content within YaleInfo is personalized for your viewing only, and is therefore only available to you after you log in securely with CAS authentication and your Yale NetID and password. Because of these security and privacy considerations, some of the portlet content of YaleInfo cannot be viewed in other portals like Google, Yahoo, or YaleStation.
