Using My Calendar
Using the new My Calendar portlet, you can display the Yale Events calendar, Course Schedule, and other online calendars that use the emerging "iCalendar" standard for sharing calendars via the Internet and the Web. See our information below for more information on iCal calendars, sharing your Google or other calendar via iCal.
The Yale calendar systems have a 15 minutes cache period before changes in the calendars are reflected in the My Calendar portlet views.
To start using My Calendar, click the "Add Portlets" link in the upper right of any YaleInfo page and pick the "My Calendar" from the "New," "Popular," or other categories listed.
To add more calendars to the portlet, click the Edit button. The Edit screen lists a number of "default" Yale calendars you can add just by clicking on the "displayed" icon in the right-hand column. The check-mark toggles the calendar on and off. Some iCal calendars offer Editing features. The calendars listed without editing icons are not editable.
When present, you can use the Edit icon to customize your calendar view. For example, you can customize the Yale Events calendar to display only those subjects you are interested in:
Adding other iCal calendars to My Calendar
To display other iCal or iCalendar calendars on the Internet, use the "Add a Calendar" feature. Also see the note below for more information on where you can find other iCal calendars on the Web and how you can access a public Google calendar via iCal.
NOTE: many iCal calendars will give you a URL starting with "webcal://... etc.. Before entering your calendar link, change the start of the URL to "http://", as in a conventional web page URL. My Calendar accepts only iCal links starting with "http" or "https". In most cases you just have to switch the start of the URL from "webcal://" to "http://" and the link will work normally.
- Enter a name for your calendar
- Enter a URL for the iCal calendar feed you wish to use.
Changing your My Calendar display
Some Yale calendars contain many listings (Yale Events, for instance). You can use the Edit screen to toggle the display of the calendar on and off without losing access to the calendar. Just click the box to change it to the green check-mark (display on) and vice-versa.
General information on iCalendar & iCal calendars
iCalendar (also called "iCal") is an emerging standard for sharing calendars and event information on the Web.
Information on the iCalendar standard:
Where to find iCal calendars that may interest you:
When visiting popular web sites, look for the little "iCal" calendar icon in the same areas you might see RSS icons (often the bottom right side of the page).
Using iCal to share your Google Calendar
Google Calendar is an easy, free service you can use to create and share an event calendar, such as a student group or other interest group calendar. To share a calendar via a Google Calendar with iCal, be sure that you mark the calendar "public." See the Google's information on creating and sharing calendars with iCal:
