The Foreign Language Requirement
The chart below illustrates the most common paths for fulfilling the foreign language distributional requirement for the Class of 2009 and subsequent classes. Additional paths and detailed information are in the Yale College Programs of Study. The chart below is for students for whom English was the language of instruction in secondary school. (If the language of instruction was not English, see NOTE below).

NOTE: Students for whom English was not the language of instruction in secondary school may fulfill the foreign language distributional requirement either by successfully completing English 114a, 120a or b, or 450b; or by successfully completing instruction in a third language, neither English nor their native language, through the level designated L2
