Your Rights under Title IX
|
The Dean's Office wants you to be fully informed about Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq. (1988), which prohibits sex discrimination in federally assisted education programs. This law states in part:
The U.S. Department of Education regulations implementing Title IX, 34 C.F.R. § 106.1 et seq. (1988), indicate the scope of the legislation and the acts of discrimination prohibited thereunder. They deal with such matters as admissions and recruitment, financial aid, athletic programs, counseling, and housing. Title IX requires that universities have a grievance procedure for the review of complaints alleging actions that would be in violation of the statute or regulations. A description of Yale's grievance procedures for undergraduate students is published in appendix A of the Undergraduate Regulations, "The Dean's Procedure for Student Complaints." Please note that there are separate procedures for student complaints of sexual harassment. The Title IX coordinator for the University is the Director of the Office for Equal Opportunity Programs (104 William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall Street, 432-0849). In Yale College, the person responsible for implementation of the Title IX regulations is Dean Jill Cutler (110 SSS, 1 Prospect Street, 432-2914). You are welcome to discuss Title IX with Dean Cutler, and copies of the complete text of Title IX and Yale's grievance procedures are available for inspection in her office. |
