Requirements for Readmission
|
During the time that a student is away from Yale College, the Committee on Readmission expects him or her to have been constructively occupied. The committee looks for evidence that candidates have used their time and energies in a focused and directed fashion. Most applicants undertake jobs or volunteer work. All candidates for readmission are expected to have maintained a satisfactory standard of conduct during the period of withdrawal. Students who withdrew either for academic reasons or for personal reasons must remain away for at least one fall term and one spring term, in either order, not including the term in which the withdrawal occurred. When the reason for the withdrawal had been authorized as medical by the University Health Services, a student must normally remain away at least one full term before a return to Yale College, not including the term in which the withdrawal occurred. The duration of a withdrawal for disciplinary reasons is set by the Yale College Executive Committee at the time the student's enrollment is suspended; the period of such withdrawal cannot be abbreviated by appeal to the Committee on Readmission. |

Enrollment in Yale Summer Session does not constitute a term of enrollment in Yale College; in general, students who are withdrawn from Yale College for any reason are eligible to apply for enrollment in Yale Summer Session during the period of their withdrawal.
Further requirements depend to some extent on the circumstances of the withdrawal and its duration. Students who are not in good academic standing, i.e., students who withdrew while a term was in progress or who withdrew for academic reasons (as defined in the Yale College Programs of Study) must ordinarily complete the equivalent of at least two term courses, either in Yale Summer Session or at another college or university, earning grades of A or B. Course work for readmission purposes must be completed within the previous two years. In general, such a record of course work is also required of students who withdrew for medical reasons and students who have been away from full-time academic work for two years or more, whether or not they were in good academic standing at the time of their departure, in order to demonstrate that upon return they can satisfactorily complete their academic program.
Course work completed in Yale Summer Session may be applied to the requirements of the bachelor's degree unless it duplicates work already done for credit in Yale College or unless explicitly excluded for credit by a statement in the Summer Session catalogue. In order for Yale College to grant credit for a course completed at another college or university, the student must enroll in a four-year, accredited institution that offers a bachelor's degree, and the course completed must carry a value of at least three semester credit hours. If the course is taken at an institution on the quarter system, it must carry a value of at least four-and-one-half quarter units. Courses themselves, as well as the institution at which they are taken, should be cleared in advance with the chair of the Committee on Readmission or the applicant's residential college dean. In some cases, the Committee on Readmission may require more than two courses or courses in a specific subject area. No more than two outside course credits may be applied towards the 36-course-credit requirement for the bachelor's degree.
