Travel during the Winter Recess
It is sometimes necessary for students and their families to make travel arrangements for the winter recess well in advance. However, because Yale College requires that students take their final examinations when they are scheduled, regardless of end-of-term travel plans, you are well advised to wait until you have submitted your course schedule for the fall term before making any travel arrangements for the winter recess. After you have made your final selection of courses in September, you will be able to determine the date of your last examination from a chart published in the 2008–2009 Yale College Programs of Study (YCPS), which will be mailed to you in August. |

If you must make travel arrangements before the fall term begins, bear in mind the possibility that you may have to take an exam as late as December 20, the last day of the final examination period for the fall term. The last examination is over at 5.30 p.m. on that day. In the heavy travel season at the end of the year, a minimum of three hours should be allowed for travel to Kennedy, LaGuardia, or Newark airports, and a minimum of two hours for travel to Bradley International Airport. Student rooms must be vacated by noon on Sunday, December 21, and will reopen for occupancy on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. Classes for the spring term begin on Monday, January 12, 2009.
