Eli Whitney Students and Nondegree Students
The Eli Whitney Students program and the Nondegree Students program are designed to meet the needs of students unable to attend college full time by offering nonresident students the opportunity to enroll in Yale College courses for credit. The Eli Whitney Students program (formerly the Special Students degree program) is for enrollment in a program of study leading to the B.A. or the B.S. degree only. The Nondegree Students program is open to academically qualified persons who have attended other colleges or universities or who have not previously continued their education beyond high school. It is also open to graduates of Yale College and to certain Yale employees with the permission of their supervisors. Students have used these programs to acquire personal or professional enrichment, to explore fields new to them, or to prepare for career changes.
Students in both programs have applied for their status to the appropriate associate director of undergraduate admissions by an established deadline, have been admitted after a careful screening process, and have paid tuition.
Instructors are not permitted to admit to their courses persons who have not formally registered at Yale as a regular student, an Eli Whitney student, a nondegree student, or an auditor (see Auditing). Eli Whitney and nondegree students are included on the class lists routinely sent to instructors, and are indicated under the "Class" column by the letters "ND" (for nondegree students) and "EW" (for Eli Whitney students). Under no circumstances may an instructor admit a nondegree student to a limited-enrollment course unless the instructor, after consultation with Dean William Whobrey, director of the Nondegree Students program, has received written permission from that office to do so. If a nondegree student seems to be having difficulties in a course, he or she should be referred to Dean Whobrey, 55 Whitney Avenue, Suite 430, 432-2430; Eli Whitney students should be referred to the dean of the residential college with which they are affiliated.
Information about the Eli Whitney Students program and the Nondegree Students program is contained in the academic regulations, chapter III of the YCPS.
