Yale College Programs of Study (YCPS) and Related Publications

Yale College Programs of Study (YCPS) is the primary source of information about the curriculum of Yale College. Published at the beginning of August and available on the Web, the YCPS contains the official listing of Yale College courses, requirements, and regulations. The Fall Supplement, which appears on line just before classes begin, lists fall-term courses that were added to the curriculum too late for inclusion in the YCPS; the Spring Supplement appears just before spring-term classes begin and does the same for spring-term courses. The Freshman Handbook, which is sent to freshmen during the summer, contains placement information and advice from those departments with courses appropriate for freshmen. The Freshman Handbook is also the primary source of information about placement policies in departments offering the possibility of acceleration credit, and it includes Yale College policies concerning acceleration. It is the responsibility of the DUS to gather and transmit the information for all these publications by the dates specified.

Keeping to the production schedule of the YCPS is especially important because the schedule is worked out carefully with the printer. The deadlines set for the submission of copy permit little flexibility. Since the methods and timetables by which departments plan their curricula vary, some DUSes may find that they must remind their colleagues of the stringency of YCPS deadlines.

The publication date for the YCPS has been fixed so that the catalog will be available for distribution to students well before the opening of classes. It is from that publication date that the schedule works backward. As with the production of any book, the schedule cannot be breached without jeopardy to the publication itself.

The deadlines for YCPS copy fall in early February (see "Deadlines and Updates" in this chapter), but there is ample opportunity throughout the spring term for DUSes to submit changes for their departments' material as they occur. The managing editor of the YCPS is Laurie Ongley, 246 Church Street, room 201, 436-8046. Any inquiries about the YCPS may be addressed to her.
