To celebrate this event, CIE & OISS are sponsoring an online photo contest. Deadline for submissions is 4pm on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. Selected photos will be displayed on-campus and on the CIE & OISS web sites. We seek photos that support the mission of IEW: "to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide." There are two photo categories. Important: All students (including those who are eligible for both categories) may submit to only one category. |

Eligibility Criteria
The Photo Contest is open to those students who meet BOTH of the following criteria:
- Are currently enrolled in, or on a leave of absence from, Yale College

- “Photos Taken Abroad” Category: Have received (or currently are receiving) a Yale College-administered fellowship or have participated (or currently are participating) in a CIE program: Year or Term Abroad Program, the Peking University - Yale University Joint Undergraduate Program, Yale-in-London program, Yale Summer Session Abroad, Summer Abroad or Bulldogs International Internship.
OR - “Photo Taken in the United States” Category: Are a Yale College international student
- “Photos Taken Abroad” Category: Have received (or currently are receiving) a Yale College-administered fellowship or have participated (or currently are participating) in a CIE program: Year or Term Abroad Program, the Peking University - Yale University Joint Undergraduate Program, Yale-in-London program, Yale Summer Session Abroad, Summer Abroad or Bulldogs International Internship.
Rules for Submission
Students may submit only ONE photo and may only submit to ONE category.- Photos must be submitted electronically as a .jpg attachment (see "How to Submit Entry" below)
- The photo must have been taken by the student.

- “Photos Taken Abroad” Category: The photo must have been taken while the student was participating in one of the Center for International Experience (CIE) programs: Year or Term Abroad Program, the Peking University - Yale University Joint Undergraduate Program, Yale-in-London program, Yale Summer Session Abroad, Summer Abroad, Bulldogs International Internship or other program funded by a Yale College-administered fellowship listed in the Student Grants Database.
OR - “Photo Taken in the United States” Category: The photo must have been taken in the United States while the student was attending Yale College.
- “Photos Taken Abroad” Category: The photo must have been taken while the student was participating in one of the Center for International Experience (CIE) programs: Year or Term Abroad Program, the Peking University - Yale University Joint Undergraduate Program, Yale-in-London program, Yale Summer Session Abroad, Summer Abroad, Bulldogs International Internship or other program funded by a Yale College-administered fellowship listed in the Student Grants Database.
- In addition to submitting the photo, the student must include ALL of the following:
• Full name
• Class year
• Residential College
• Yale e-mail address
• The name of the CIE program (if applicable) in which the student participated or the fellowship that the student received (“Outgoing” category only)
• The name of the country and city or town where the student took the photo.
• A photo caption not to exceed 125 words describing how the student's photo "celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide."
Note: The student's name, year, college, email address, relevant CIE program or fellowship, and name of where the photo was taken will NOT be counted toward the 125 word caption limit.
- Students agree to all terms and conditions of the CIE Photo Contest .
Terms and Conditions
1. Submissions will be judged by staff members of the Center for International Experience (CIE) and Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS).- All decisions are final.
- Winners will be notified by email on November 16, 2009.
- Photo release terms: By submitting their photos to the Photo Contest, students agree to the following:
• Students grant Yale College the right to use their submitted photo for the purpose of promoting Yale College’s international programs;
• Students give Yale College, for the expressed purpose of promoting Yale College’s international programs, the right and permission with respect to the submitted photo to copyright the same in Yale College's own name or any other name that Yale College may choose; to use, re-use, publish and republish the same in whole or in part individually or in conjunction with other photos in any medium and for the expressed purpose of promoting Yale College; and to use their name in connection therewith if Yale College so chooses;
• Students release and discharge Yale College from any and all claims and demands arising out of or in connection with the use of the photo, including any and all claims for libel.
- Failure to include any of the background information items will result in disqualification.
Selection of Winner Criteria
Winners will be selected based on the following:
- Photo - The photo will be judged on the basis of artistic and technical merit, but more emphasis will be placed on the ways in which the photo captures the spirit of the IEW mission: "to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide."
- Caption - The caption will be judged on the basis of how it addresses the ways in which the photo captures the spirit of the IEW mission: "to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide."
- Photos will be evaluated "as is" for the purpose of the contest. However, Yale College reserves the right to resize the picture for its online presentation.
- Background information will not be judged in any way.
How to Submit Entry
- Students must submit their ONE entry by email to iew.photocontest@yale.edu.
- Depending upon which category they choose, students must type "Photo Contest – Photos Taken Abroad" or “Photo Contest – Photos Taken in the US” as the subject of their email.
- Students must include caption and photo information in the body of the email and include their photo submission as a .jpg attachment.
- There is no contest entry fee.
- Entries must be submitted by 4pm on November 11, 2009.
