Beijing

One of the world's oldest cities, Beijing has been the home of the Chinese central government since the 13th century. It is a hybrid of multinational modernism and ancient culture. Where else could you enjoy Malaysian fusion dishes prepared by a top chef within the crumbling walls of a 500-year-old courtyard-style home? Enjoy a pizza overlooking the Drum Tower, constructed in the 15th century as a testament to Mongol power. These luxuries come on the cusp of a dramatic change from state-controlled economy to semi-independent market economy. Wealth has changed hands quickly and in great quantity as is evidenced by the sea of brand new individually-owned cars; shiny, multi-storied fashion malls; and the latest electronics fads.

Program Activities

The Program sponsors the following opportunities for travel and cultural activities:

  • Group trip outside of Beijing
  • Student-led trips outside of Beijing (student organized, must be approved by PKU onsite Director and students must present report on trip)
  • Roommate trip (accompany your Chinese roommate to his/her hometown)
  • Outings to Beijing museums, theater and historical and cultural sites

In addition, students may choose to:

  • Join student organizations and social groups at PKU
  • Use gymnasium facilities at PKU
