Freshman Seminars

The Freshman Seminar program organizes seminars for first-year students, across a wide range of topics, with some of Yale’s most distinguished teachers and scholars. Recent subjects have included medieval art and music, Spanish literature, African American history, contemporary Chinese society, epidemiology and public health, environmental science, and biomedical engineering. Seminars meet twice each week and do not, unless otherwise noted, presume any prior experience in the field. All seminars carry regular Yale course credit and count toward the fulfillment of appropriate distributional and major requirements.

Approximately thirty-five freshman seminars are offered every year, and enrollment in each seminar is limited to fifteen or eighteen students, depending on the nature of the seminar. Demand for these spaces often exceeds the number available, so only students who are genuinely interested should apply. Students are ordinarily not permitted to enroll in a freshman seminar if they are enrolled in either Directed Studies (DS) or Perspectives on Science (PS).

If you have questions about freshman seminars, contact the Office of Freshman Affairs at freshman.affairs@yale.edu or 203 432-2907.
