French

The departmental placement examination in French is given only in the fall. It will be administered on Sunday, August 30, in rooms 101 and 102, Linsly-Chittenden Hall. Students with last names beginning A–M take the examination at 9 a.m., and students with last names beginning N–Z take it at 1.30 p.m. A makeup examination for students unable to take the test at the scheduled time will be administered on Monday, August 31, at 9 a.m. in room 102, Linsly-Chittenden Hall. Results of the examination will be posted on Tuesday, September 1, by 2 p.m. on the French department’s Web site, and at the French department, third floor, 82–90 Wall Street.

Students who have studied French in the past and who wish to continue their work in the language at Yale, including those who scored below 5 on either of the French Advanced Placement tests, are required to take the placement examination. Students who scored 5 on either AP test do not need to take the placement examination; they should discuss course placement with the director of undergraduate studies, who will be present in Linsly-Chittenden Hall during preregistration.

Preregistration, which is required for all fall-term courses numbered 100 to 159, will take place on Tuesday, September 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. in rooms 101 and 103, Linsly-Chittenden Hall. See the French department’s Web site for details. Please note that there is no preregistration for spring-term classes.
