Chemistry

On Monday, August 31, from 9 to 11.30 a.m. in room 110, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory, the director of undergraduate studies will be on hand to introduce the various lecture and lab courses and to describe the placement process. In addition, the associate dean for science education and other directors of undergraduate studies will be present to answer general questions. This meeting is open to all, but will be of particular interest to prospective science and engineering majors.

The Chemistry department will participate in the Academic Fair on Tuesday, September 1.

The placement of entering students in general chemistry is determined primarily on the basis of admissions and preregistration data. Entrance to more advanced courses is determined through the use of a departmental placement examination. Students can find their initial placement by following the links and instructions provided at the Chemistry department Web site.

All freshmen wishing to enroll in organic or physical chemistry or requesting to raise their placement level in general chemistry courses are required to take a departmental placement examination at 12.30 p.m. on Monday, August 31, in room 110, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory. Students with schedule conflicts may attend a makeup registration and examination at 9 a.m. in room 110, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory, on Tuesday, September 1.

Two hours should be set aside for the orientation meeting and the examination. For the latter, the use of an electronic calculator is permitted, and several #2 pencils should be brought to mark the answer sheets. The examination results are used together with other admissions data to place students in the course best suited to their science backgrounds and anticipated field of study. Students can find their placement updated after the placement examination by following the links and instructions provided at Chemistry department Web site.

Students who believe they have been incorrectly placed may appeal their course assignment by consultation with a Chemistry placement adviser. Advisers will be present in room 1, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory, following each orientation meeting and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday, August 31 through September 4.

Information on registration for discussion and laboratory sections can be found in the online description of each course in the Online Course Information (OCI) system.
