The interdisciplinary major in East Asian Studies provides an excellent preparation for graduate study or for careers that require an understanding of East Asia. Students in the major concentrate on either China or Japan and choose a humanities or a social science emphasis. They design their programs in consultation with the DUS.
Freshmen who intend to major in East Asian Studies should begin
language training as soon as possible. CHNS 110a, 120b, Elementary Modern Chinese, or 112a, 122b, Elementary Modern Chinese for Advanced Learners,
or JAPN 110a, 120b, Elementary Japanese, are prerequisite to the major.
Many majors spend part or all of junior year studying in China or Japan. With the DUS's approval, credit for such study up to the equivalent of six Yale course credits may count toward the major. Information on a wide variety of approved study abroad programs is available
from The Council on East Asian Studies, 320 Luce Hall, 203 432-3428.
Students are encouraged to visit the Web site of E-Assisted Planning: East Asia for help in planning the major and finding information related to East Asian languages and cultures.
