Date: August 20, 2007 To: Directors of Interdisciplinary Programs in Yale College From: Peter Salovey, Dean of Yale College Topic: Poorvu Family Fund for Teaching in Yale College Several years ago the Poorvu family established a fund to recognize and to enhance Yale's strength in interdisciplinary teaching. According to the terms of the gift, the award is to be made to outstanding untenured faculty who have demonstrated excellence in teaching in interdisciplinary undergraduate programs. Besides paying tribute to these junior faculty members, the award allows them to focus during the summer months on research essential to their development as scholar and teachers. |

On the basis of nominations from chairmen and directions of interdisciplinary programs, the Selection Committee will award one or more prizes. We invite you to propose a candidate for the Poorvu Family Award from among your untenured colleagues and to provide the following supporting materials:
• a letter, written by you or by another appropriate faculty member whom you have designated, giving a detailed description of the nominee's teaching in and commitment to an interdisciplinary undergraduate program;
• the candidate's vita;
• examples of work (course materials, research proposals, or the like) on which the nomination is based.
Preference will be given to candidates who have not held a Morse or Junior Faculty Fellowship and to those who will have been on the Yale faculty for at least two years as of July 1, 2007.
I hope that you will take your earliest opportunity to discuss this prize with your colleagues and to come up with a nomination. In order to be sure that the Selection Committee will be able to give full consideration to your candidate, please submit your nomination and supporting materials to KC Mills in the Yale College Dean's Office (108 SSS) no later than September 30, 2007.
