Fellowship Programs Research Fellowships for Juniors (Bates, et al.)

About These Fellowships

Fellowship Programs Research Fellowships for Juniors (Bates, et al.), supported through the generosity of Jonathan Edwards College, are open to Yale College students in the class of 2013 (or students for whom 2012 is their final summer). Applicants should give evidence that their educational experience would be significantly enhanced by a project of independent study and/or research outside of the United States. The Fellowship Programs Research Fellowships for Juniors (Bates, et al.) only support research projects in the humanities and social sciences. Students conducting research in the natural or applied sciences should apply for the Alan S. Tetelman 1958 Fellowships for International Research in the Sciences.

  • These fellowships are most often awarded to students who are researching a topic for their senior project or senior essay.
  • Supervision of the research by a Yale faculty member, or other expert in the field, should be part of the proposal.

An application for the Fellowship Programs Research Fellowships for Juniors (Bates, et al.) will be considered for all relevant fellowships listed below. Applicants do not need to indicate which specific fellowships best fit their proposed project.

The Fellowship Programs Research Fellowships for Juniors (Bates, et al.) include:

  • The Henry James Travel Fellowship supports students traveling outside the U.S. during the summer after their junior year.
  • The Howard W. Hilgendorf Memorial Fellowship which provides funding to enable students to conduct independent study and research outside of the U.S.
  • The Jeffrey Lewis Summer Research and Travel Fellowship which supports international research projects in the humanities, with preference given to Humanities majors.
  • The John Boit Morse Memorial Scholarship which supports international independent study and research in the Fine Arts, with preference given to an art student.
  • The Lewis P. Curtis Fellowship which supports international research in the fields of History, Philosophy, and the Arts and Letters, specifically in the preparation of senior essays.
  • The Robert C. Bates Summer Traveling Fellowship supports students who give evidence that their educational experience would be significantly enhanced by a project of independent study and/or research outside of the continental U.S.
  • The Robert S. Kilborne Memorial Traveling Scholarship which supports summer independent research in England on some aspect of English Literature, History, or the Arts.

Eligibility and Restrictions

It is prohibited to submit more than one application to the Fellowship Programs Research Fellowships for Juniors (Bates, et al.).

The proposed project must be a full-time commitment and be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current MedEx threat ratings, State Department warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.
