Description
The Charles and Julia Henry Fund was established in 1930 by the will of the late Lady Henry "...in the earnest hope and desire of cementing the bonds of friendship between the British Empire and the United States." The Fund's income is applied to the provision of Henry Fellowships for British subjects tenable in America at Harvard and Yale Universities, and for American citizens tenable at Cambridge and Oxford Universities in England.
One Henry Fellowship for study during the 2009-2010 academic year will be awarded to a Yale student. The Fellowship supports one year at Oxford or Cambridge University and is not renewable. Henry candidates are responsible for their own admission and placement. Candidates must apply to their study program of choice at Cambridge or Oxford prior to submitting an application to the Yale College Henry Fellowship Committee. Since certain programs fill up quickly, the Cambridge/Oxford application should be initiated early in the fall term and completed well before the program deadline. The award provides tuition, approved fees, a cost of living stipend, and a transatlantic travel grant.
Eligibility
Candidates must submit evidence of distinction in some recognized branch of learning; a high academic standard is required. In addition, candidates must produce evidence of other achievements, personal qualities, and character relevant to the founder's intent. Candidates must present a definite plan of study or research to be carried out, and the proposed work must fall within the university facilities available at Oxford or Cambridge. The choice of subject of study is unrestricted, provided it meets with the approval of the British university which the Henry Fellow will attend. Eligible are unmarried U.S. citizens who will have received a Yale bachelor's degree by the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year. Preference will be given to members of the Class of 2010.
Selection Criteria
The Committee will consider only those candidates who will not receive additional financial assistance and who are prepared to give their whole time to the purpose of the Henry Fellowship, i.e., study, active participation in the social and extracurricular life of the college in addition to academic work, and travel.
