Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship Program

Quick Facts

Eligibility: Seniors & recent alumni (Classes of 2007, 2008, and 2009)

Purpose: Projects abroad (visual arts)

Campus Deadline: 3:00 PM, Friday, January 29, 2010

Description

The Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship Program awards annually three fellowships to students in the visual and fine arts, specifically: art history, conservation, studio art and photography. The Fellowships are supported by income from the Mortimer and Sara Hays Endowment Fund at Brandeis University and provide support for living expenses and travel outside the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. Each award provides a stipend of $19,000, and is not intended to be renewable.

Eligibility

Yale is one of ten institutions invited to nominate four candidates to the national competition. Eligible are graduating Seniors and recent graduates of Yale College (Classes of 2007, 2008, and 2009). Preference will be given to members of the Class of 2010.

Selection Criteria

Awards are made on the basis of merit; financial need is not a consideration. Selection criteria include the candidate’s preparation, the necessity of travel abroad to meet the goals and objectives of the project, the relationship of the project to the candidate’s professional or creative goals, awareness of resources abroad, and the appropriateness of one year as the time period for the project. The award does not normally support formal graduate study. Upon completion of the fellowship year, fellowship recipients must submit a written report summarizing their activities.

Make an Appointment

Interested applicants should schedule an appointment with Linda De Laurentis, Director of the Fellowship Program, 203-432-8685. No appointments can be made by e-mail.

Application Information and Instructions

NOTE: Applications are available from the Office of Fellowship Programs and are available online from the Hays-Brandeis web site.

A complete application includes four copies (original plus three copies) of each of the following items:

1. A completed application form.

2. A proposal of five to seven pages (approximately 1,500 to 2,000 words) describing clearly the project and/or activities to be undertaken during the fellowship year, the goals and objectives of the project, and how it relates to the candidate's professional or other interests. Requirements and preparation for travel abroad should be clearly explained. The proposal must be typed, double spaced, and printed on 8 ½ x 11 paper.

3. A projected budget for the candidate’s fellowship year, including estimated travel and living expenses, as well as any special expenses related to the proposed project, such as art supplies and the like (refer to Preparing a Fellowship Budget). The budget should include all funds that the candidate expects to use during the fellowship year. Any unusual categories of expenditure should be carefully explained.

And one copy of the following:

1. A Student Grants & Fellowships Database registration page. (Learn "How to Register" here.)

2. Two letters from individuals who know the applicant well and can speak of the viability and merit of the project and his or her ability to complete successfully the activities proposed.

For candidates in the visual arts and art conservation only:

1. Fifteen images in color or black and white, as appropriate, of at least ten different, recent works. Visual materials must be submitted on a single, nonreturnable CD or DVD.

2. Do not submit more than fifteen individual images. The candidate's name must be printed in indelible ink on the CD or DVD that is submitted. Candidates should include a typed list that identifies all images according to the size and art medium of each image.

3. Motion picture project samples should be submitted on a single DVD of not less than two or more than five minutes in length.

Note Regarding Transcripts: For the initial campus competition, the Office of Fellowship Programs will obtain unofficial Yale transcripts for all applicants. However, for the ensuing national competition, nominees must request official transcripts from the Yale College Registrar (to be ordered through OFP). An official transcript must also be requested from any other institution attended for post-secondary study. Only one official copy of each transcript is required.

Applications and supporting materials must be received by Friday, January 29, 2010 3:00 PM; post to:
