English Folk Song Suite (1924)
RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
Vaughan Williams’ interest in the wind band nowhere found more satisfactory expression than in this popular composition. The musical subjects are all traditional and reflect the composer’s lifelong interest and studies in the field of folk music. His modal harmonies and striking rhythms are drawn from the folk songs of Norfolk and Somerset. The movements are subtitled MarchÑSeventeen Come Sunday, IntermezzoÑMy Bonnie Boy, and MarchÑFolksongs from Somerset.
