Symphonic Sketches from West Side Story (1957)
LEONARD BERNSTEIN (arr. Donald Hunsberger)
The score to this famed production needs little introduction. Characterized as the American “Romeo and Juliet” with its romantic settings against the background of racial and social strife, Bernstein’s music reflects the thousands of emotions that permeate Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics. From a basic mood of the studied nonchalance and defiance of the younger generation, the music is at times tender and devout, or in contrasting sections, dynamic in its intensity. Donald Hunsberger has selected five sections of the orchestral score for this wind orchestra transcription.
