Getting Involved

PhotoThe World Fellows Program encourages anyone with an interest in international affairs, foreign cultures, or a particular country or region to get involved! There are numerous established avenues for participation, and Program staff are always happy to entertain new suggestions.

Each fall, the Program sponsors a multitude of events featuring the World Fellows as speakers. These events take many forms, from formal panel discussions to casual lunches in dining halls – and everything in between. A large number of these events are open to the entire Yale student body and to faculty, and many are open to the broader Yale and New Haven communities. Events run from early September through mid-December each year. Check the online Events listing and calendar for up-to-date information.

Undergraduate Students

The Program offers Yale undergraduate students the opportunity to serve as Liaisons to the World Fellows each fall. Typically, the Program selects two undergraduate students per Fellow, conducting an application and selection process each spring. Student Liaisons are vital to the World Fellows’ assimilation into residential college and campus life.

Liaisons work to create opportunities for World Fellows to become involved in the life of the University, including:

  • Promotion of World Fellows Night
  • Organization of at least two speaking events for World Fellows in Liaisons’ residential colleges or student clubs
  • Twice monthly college dinners with World Fellows that are open to members of the residential college
  • Development of opportunities for World Fellows to engage student groups on campus
  • Promotion of World Fellows events through postering and e-mail announcements

Graduate and Professional School Students

Photo The World Fellows Program offers two distinct opportunities for Yale  graduate and professional school students.

Graduate and Professional Student Affiliates are Yale graduate or professional school students who represent a diverse and internationally-minded segment of the student body.  Two students per Fellow are chosen as Affiliates. The Affiliate Program was developed to build a closer relationship and greater opportunity for interaction between the World Fellows and the graduate and professional school students.

Graduate and Professional Student Affiliates act as a bridge between the World Fellows and the graduate community at large.  Each Affiliate serves as a point of contact into the various graduate and professional schools. In addition, Affiliates act as a source of information about academics, opportunities on campus, and New Haven. Affiliates build relationships between the graduate community and the World Fellows in a number of different ways, including the following:

  • Organization of one World Fellows event, such as a talk or networking event in the Affiliates’ respective schools/programs
  • Promotion of World Fellows events in the Affiliates’ respective schools/programs through postering and email announcements
  • Development of opportunities for World Fellows to engage student groups on campus
  • Informing World Fellows of conferences, events, and talks taking place in the graduate community

Associate Fellows are Yale graduate or professional school students selected to participate in the academic and intellectual aspects of the Yale World Fellows’ experience. As important contributors to the programmatic activities, 2-4 Associates are selected each year to facilitate the World Fellows integration into the University’s extensive resources. Since the World Fellows hail from countries other than the United States, the Associates are asked to contribute U.S. perspectives to the conversation.

Associates participate in the Yale World Fellows global affairs seminar twice weekly.  Taught by top Yale Faculty, the Seminar is specifically designed for the World Fellows and Associates to cover a wide array of topics such as global governance, international public health, rule of law, development economics, globalization, and technology. In addition, Associates attend weekly dinners with the Fellows and distinguished guest speakers and are encouraged to participate in a number of other activities with the Fellows such as trips to Washington, DC and New York City, and events that feature World Fellows on campus.

Associate Fellows have played a unique and integral role in the World Fellows Program each year since its inception. Please click here for a list of Associate Fellows and their bios.
